Several parliamentary party leaders do not want to ban fur farms in the next government platform, according to the online newspaper Verkkoapila. The Green League and the Left Alliance have called for a crackdown on the farms.
Timo Kalli, the chair of the Centre Party parliamentary group, told the newspaper that he does not want to include the issue in the government platform. Marja Tiura, the vice-chair of the National Coalition Party parliamentary group, as well as Miapetra Kumpula-Natri, the vice-chair of the Social Democrat parliamentary group, said they don’t think banning the farms would be the right solution. However, they added that conditions at the farms should improve.
Meanwhile the vice-chair of the Swedish People’s Party parliamentary group Mats Nylund said that under no circumstances should a ban be included in the government platform.
However Annika Lapintie, the chair of the Left Alliance parliamentary group, said the government platform should include a ban. Kirsi Ojansuu, the vice-chair of the Greens parliamentary group, added that some steps should be taken towards banning fur farms.
Last month, YLE broadcast disturbing images of animal negligence at several fur farms in Finland. The footage was secretly taped by the Justice for Animals organisation.YLE
