Prices of flats in old apartment blocks and row houses fell by 1.3 percent country-wide in December on the previous month, according to Statistics Finland. The slump was most pronounced in the Helsinki region, where flats were 2.6 percent cheaper.

In the rest of the country, prices edged down by two-tenths of a percent compared to November.

However, in comparison with December 2010, prices for old flats outside greater Helsinki rose by 0.7 percent. But they remained steady in the rest of the capital region.

Preliminary data indicates that in the whole of 2011, prices of flats in old apartment blocks and row houses increased by 2.7 percent from the previous year. The rise was clearest in the Helsinki region, where it amounted to 3.3 percent. In the rest of the country, flats were 2.2 percent more expensive than in 2010.

Prices for apartments in new blocks of flats and row houses spiked higher over the same period. The country average for the rise was 4.8 percent—3.2 percent in Helsinki and 5.7 in the rest of the country.

In 2011, the average price per square metre in old apartments in the whole country was 2,179 euros. For new flats, this figure was 3,169 euros. In both cases, prices in the capital area were significantly higher than elsewhere.YLE
