Kiira Korpi charmed judges and spectators alike on Friday evening.

Kiira Korpi and Juulia Turkkila wowed the crowds at the European Figure Skating Championships in Sheffield, England, on Friday evening.

After leading until late in the contest, Korpi ended up second in the Ladies' Short Programme with 61.80 points. In a controversial decision, Korpi's triple Rittberger jump was downgraded to a double by the judges.

The winner was Italy's Carolina Kostner with 63.22 points. She won silver at last year's Europeans. Third was Russia's Ksenia Makarova with 57.55 points.

A 23-year-old Tampere native, Korpi won bronze at the European Championships in both 2007 and 2011.

Turkkila, a 17-year-old newcomer from Helsinki, skated without significant errors, but placed only 15th out of 28 competitors. She earned 45.65 points.

On Saturday evening, Korpi and Turkkila will try to improve their rankings in the Free Programme at the Motorpoint Arena. The broadcast begins at 8.10pm on YLE TV2.
